MARGA: Generation of the Marga
I began to dream of the Marga thirty years ago in my desire to create something meaningful that would contribute to my community. My observations of the world and the people in my life have shown me that there is a need for an artistic venue through which to speak about the story of humanity. The idea of the Marga was fueled by the birth of my children who had the ability, as many children do in their primary years, to ask why people are so cruel, and express the desire to make it better. As an artist, I have experienced an economic structure which can inhibit free expression and often devalues or is unsupportive of artistic endeavors, especially in the communal sense. It is essential to give artistic groups and individuals a voice in the context of homogenizing cultures and use global awareness and technologies to bring this idea to its full potential. This project will not only address issues essential to our cultural and ecological survival, but will give a group of sculptors, writers, designers, musicians and craftsmen a venue of expression beyond commercial art. The initial group of artisans will also have a chance through apprenticeship to pass on their talents and create a community of people who will benefit from the project for years to come.
